Datejust Leather Strap
Leather bands or straps are found on a number of Rolex models, including the classic Datejust. The strap is an alternative for the watch’s Jubilee band, a five-piece metal link bracelet designed especially for the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust in 1945. The leather band was created out of necessity by Rolex founders Wilsdorf and Davis, as British soldiers stationed in Africa couldn’t stand to wear jackets and vests housing their pocket watches due to the country’s blistering heat. They needed a way to strap watches to their wrists, which birthed today’s leather watch strap.
